AMERICA ALONE: What they're saying!

Here's a sampling of some of the reaction to Mark's new book - from reviews, interviews and reader response:

FACING THE ISLAMIST MENACE
Christopher Hitchens has a somewhat critical review of America Alone . I disagree with him strongly about a common "Euro-Muslim identity". I think there is one, and that it transcends differences between German Turks and French Algerians, and that there are already signs that it's more authentically pan-Continental than ersatz EU "Europeanness". However, his criticisms in this and other matters are worth pondering. See also Brigitte Pellerin in The Ottawa Citizen on "our collective menopause".
EUROPA, ZOLANG HET NOG DUURT
"Mark Steyn is een wonderlijke man," says Chris Rutenfrans in the Dutch newspaper De Volksrant. In Canada, it's still the  Number Two bestseller - and Bridget Tingley puts it at the top of her home library hit parade.

SOCIETAL COLLAPSE: DIAMOND vs STEYN
An interesting comparison.
NOT WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR
Michael Gove reviews AA in The Spectator, a British review to add to the week's raves from Germany, Oz, the US and Canada, where it's this week's Number Three bestseller. If you're in Switzerland, it's also reviewed in the print edition of SonntagsZeitung. Notwithstanding the sales numbers, Geoff Lambert has a somewhat tentative review  in The Winnipeg Free Press.

Die Welt's Hannes Stein reviews einen Bestseller geschrieben. We think he calls America Alone "the most important non-fiction book of the year", which is pretty good in any language. In The Jerusalem Post, Michael Freund picks up the theme and concludes: "Say goodbye to Europe".

and John Biver says the book has
" THE POTENTIAL TO RIVAL THOMAS PAINE IN HISTORICAL VALUE"
"THE MOST FRIGHTENING BOOK OF 2006"
A rave from The Wave in Northern California - and in The Washington Times Suzanne Fields calls it "a doomsday book to spook any New Year's celebration". Andrew Stuttaford calls it  the book of the year and Lisa Schiffren says Mark should have been Time's Man Of The Year!
"STEYN IS CANADA'S GIFT TO THE WORLD"
says The Toronto Sun's Salim Mansur

Michael Graham comes up with the winning formula: Steyn meets Borat. (Actually, I nearly did: Nigella Lawson invited us to dinner one night, but I had to bail at the last minute.)
FROSTING OUT NORTHERN CONSERVATIVES
The National Post's Barbara Kay on America Alone and the ordering policies of the Dominion's bookstores and libraries. By the way, there's a fascinating collection of letters in today's print edition amplifying the point, including this gem:

After reading Ms. Kay's column I went to the Calgary Public Library's Web site to request a hold on Mark Steyn's America Alone. There was one copy available, and I would be 59th on the hold list. The hold would remain effective until May 11, 2008.

"BUSH GETS QUESTIONS - AND A BOOK"
This account makes it sound as if I ostentatiously inscribedAmerica Alone for the President unprovoked. In fact, I only did it (and somewhat sheepishly) when he asked me to. It was a great honor for a foreigner (and almost makes up for the obnoxious twit at the Derby Line, Vermont border crossing who doubted the legitimacy of my Green Card). John Hawkins, by the way, calls it a  " superb book" .
